Apprentice Spotlight: Kimmon Williams

Kimmon Williams first learned about unions from her friend, whose father was a postal worker and union member. Williams began her labor activism by joining rallies and recalls the joy she felt while being surrounded by, and singing with the community. Now, more than a decade later, Williams is the Secretary of the Labor Heritage Foundation (LHF), which aims to strengthen the labor movement through the use and preservation of music, arts, and history.
As a 2024 WILL Empower Apprentice, Williams had already known of WILL Empower through Union Jobs. But she initially hesitated to apply because she believed the apprenticeship was only for early-career individuals. Additionally, while Williams already had labor experience, she felt she did not have enough experience working within unions. After some encouragement from a mentor dispelling her misconceptions, she applied and was placed with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT). There, she conducted research with one of the largest labor unions in the world, representing over 1.3 million members across North America.

Through her experience with WILL Empower, Williams gained a community that provided encouragement and support while learning new skills. Williams described how this contrasted with her previous experience in corporate environments, which encouraged her to “bring her whole self to work” without meaning it.
The apprenticeship program helped cement Williams’ belief that dignity in labor is genuinely for everyone. Her definition of labor justice has expanded to include intersectional approaches such as criminal justice reform. Williams feels the WILL Empower Apprenticeship program allowed her to not only find her place within the labor movement, but clarify her principles. She eventually hopes to lead communication and strategy for a union.
Williams encourages anyone who is interested in or passionate about the labor movement to apply for the WILL Empower Apprenticeship! Learn more about the program here. 2027 applications will be open in the fall.
